An Arbitrary Song About Fred and Jane

Fred is in the kitchen cooking baked beans by himself
While Jane is playing Tarzan in the yard
I am watching wrestling and I'm drinking blue sambucca
Wondering just why concrete is so hard
Fred looks out the window and he wishes Jane would notice
That he's put a purple rinse through his hair
And I am thinking Fred is such a fool it's just not funny
'Cause even I can tell that Jane's not there

Well, wonderful things should happen to good people
And good people should love themselves
But we're all far too busy sharing secrets with the sidewalk
And we're all too busy loving someone else

James is on the toilet, speaking on his brand new cell-phone
While Mary breastfeeds babies in the dark
And Desmond married Molly (but then we already knew that)
So let's get naked in the park
Fred decides to put his faith in Something that he can't see
And I decide to worship colour TV
And we're all sitting watching Karen draw a perfect 'nana
Thinking pain is all just arbitrary

Well, wonderful things should happen to good people
And good people should love themselves
But we're all far too busy sharing secrets with the sidewalk
And we're all too busy loving someone else

There's something in the air and all this talk about the weather
There's something that the TV doesn't show
It's that something in the way that Fred keeps looking out the window
'Cause there are some things he knows Jane will never know
Now Fred is in the kitchen painting pictures with his fingers
While Jane is outside howling at the moon
And Fred is busy loving Jane in thought and word and deed and
vainly hoping Jane will learn to love him soon

Well, wonderful things should happen to good people
And good people should love themselves
But we're all far too busy sharing secrets with the sidewalk
And we're all too busy loving someone else

Yeah, wonderful things should happen to good people
But good people tend to lose themselves
Cause we're all far too busy trying to hear the sidewalk's answer
And we're all too busy being someone else
